Our flagship awards campaigns showcase the best of British HR talent. Interested in taking part? This guide provides insider insight into the Judges’ evaluation process and how to increase your chances of success.

In this interview, Liz Dowling, Chief People Officer at VIOOH and Awards Judge, reveals what she looks for when assessing entries and offers some top tips on how to write a compelling submission.

Liz said: “During my career, I've been fortunate to run very successful recruitment agencies, in-house TA teams and advise several HR & TA start-ups, so I was excited when New Possible invited me to judge.

Upon receiving the entries, I felt a huge sense of responsibility. Why? It's an award. An opportunity to celebrate and recognise those in the industry who are going above and beyond. The pace setters, the innovators, the organisations, and individuals that make a difference and raise the bar.”

So, without further ado, here are Liz’s top tips for writing a great entry:

1. Decide which category is best for your achievements

If you're entering both a specialist and generalist category, focus on the specialist one rather than try to cover everything in 500 words.

2. About your company

Write this section like your audience are 8-year-olds who have no idea about who or what you are. Cut out the jargon and industry terms, and make sure that it hasn't been created for the award entry. It should be authentic and reflect the organisation.

3. Share your story

Articulate where you've come from and where you’re going. Validate your results with data or quotes that demonstrate the impact that has been made.

4. Keep it simple

Less is more. Some of the best entries I read were related to improving core process.

5. Data tells a thousand words

Invest in defining metrics. It's essential that you can quantify programmes to track your progress and this helps to raise your profile and investment for the next change initiative.

6. Focus on experience

Detail how you have improved the experience for your customers (employees, candidates and other stakeholders).

Why get involved?

  1. Promote your organisation to a wide audience: Being named a Finalist or indeed a Winner will help to raise the profile of your organisation across customers, partners, and potential employees.
  2. Recognise the work of your people: Highlight the individuals and teams that are helping to power your organisation forward.
  3. Receive great PR: We’ll be profiling our winners and issuing a press release to help promote the winners.
  4. Promote the UK as a people leader: By taking part and sharing your success stories you’ll be helping to showcase the UK as a global leader.
  5. No cost: There’s no cost to take part. One of our core principles is to be accessible to every firm and that’s why we’re encouraging entries from a wide range of organisations.
